Sunday in the Park with George

Sunday in the Park with George was the 2006 production of 'Into Sondheim'. Inspired by the work of French Artist Georges Seurat, Sondheim and Lapine's musical 'Sunday in the Park With George' celebrates the art of creation and the creation of art.  In the first half, set in 1884, the people and the animals - in Seurat's painting - A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte - come to life through the eyes of their artist George.

We see how he struggles to reconcile his passion for his painting with his deep-hidden love for the people int he painting.  In the second half, a century later, Seurat's great grandson - a modern artist - is struggling to create something as new and as original as his predecessor.  He must connect with his past before  being able to move on.
