Merrily We Roll Along

Have you ever looked back at your life and wondered which decisions got you to where you are? Have you ever looked to the future, and wondered where you and your friends will be in 20 years time? Stephen Sondheim's Merrily We Roll Along chronicles nearly two decades in the lives of three talented artists – a composer, a lyricist, and a writer – who become “Old Friends” in their youth and remain inseparable until various other alliances and life changing decisions create conflicts impacting friendship, marriage and careers.

Moving backwards through time, from 1976 to 1957, the action focuses on the dilemma of artistic integrity versus commercial success, as it slowly strips away the characters' cynicism and bitter disappointment to reveal their youthful loyalty, creativity and innocence. However,  as the audience already knows how the three end up later in life, by the time the trio finally reach the poignant number "Our Time", full of dreams and aspirations , the song is both a triumph and a heartbreak.

Regarded as one of Sondheim's most eloquent and accessible scores, Merrily has been hugely successful around the world, despite initially lasting just 2 weeks on Broadway in 1981 . Two decades on, after various revisions to the script and the score, it has taken its rightful place as a landmark American musical.
